This is wonderful when you use a triangle to have a diagonal split cell. But I agree with oleww below that it is easier to use the format cells then paint.
My problem is the same as many others I have noted. It would seem very simple but it isn't. I just want to split the cell vertically in half. There is an option in format cells but it is usually grayed out so unable to be used. Occasionally this vertical line will be lit and able to be used but it never seems to be highlighted when I need it! URG Can anyone help me? I am trying to halve a cell to indicate half hours, i.e. 8:30, 9:30 instead of 8 pm and 9 pm etc. Thank you

Thank you so much for the posting.
Such a simple and yet such a brilliant idea.

This is certainly one way to accomplish this but have you considered Fill Effects? By default this method blends the two colors you choose together. However if you want to remove this effect you can with vba. Here is how I did it. Look for Gibbs31415's comment. Dude this method is retarded af. You can simply press right button of the mouse and then choose format cells and you will see it lel. Please hang yourself.

You are an idiot and obviously didn't grasp the point of this article. Please explain how what you suggested would only fill in the triangle with color, and not the whole square.

oleww is right - go to format cell, fill effects, and select gradient. It's not a perfect 50/50 shading (it's a gradient), but this is at least an automated solution.

oleww is incorrect. the point of this is to have two distinct colours... anyone can gradient easily but is NOT the same thing as what's happening here. If only there was an easier way to do it since this method above is a pain and writing over top is even trickier...
